Tutorial

CSCW in our Connected Digital Era

Brief summary

With almost all technology now used in social contexts, what unique perspectives and skills does CSCW bring? This tutorial considers major developments in CSCW software, devices, methods, and markets—and issues that we are addressing. I will review the emergence of CSCW 25 years after the first HCI studies appeared, and the paths that CSCW took on different continents over 35 years. By understanding the trajectories and the forces that created them, we are in the best position to anticipate what will come next. I will then survey several key issues faced now and cover in some detail a few topics that are fascinating illustrations of dynamics at work. Bullet point slides will be few and discussion periods are built into the schedule.
